Alan Davies

Artist

“I’ve lived in the West most of my life. I grew up here, with industry all around me: the railway workshops, the power station, the old meat works in Newport, the flare of the Altona refinery. It’s helped to keep me grounded in reality as an artist. I’ve always gravitated towards art that reflects and finds meaning in everyday things, that examines and celebrates the achievements, challenges, joys and tragedies of ordinary people. For the Art & industry Festival I recorded six and a half hours of oral history interviews with workers at the Toyota plant in Altona.”

Alan has a theatre background as a performer, stage manager and lighting designer. He has designed and operated lighting for Melbourne Playback Theatre Company since 1998. He has also worked in community radio in both on and off-air roles. Alan is currently conductor of the Newport Community Choir and an active member of the Newport Fiddle and Folk Club. He sings with vocal trio Paisley and Plaid. Alan’s ‘day job’ is in online communications. He manages websites and email bulletins for a number of community groups.

Alan Davies’ work will feature during the Festival at Toyota Open Day
